FAQs

How long does SMP last?

There are three main layers of skin: the top called the Epidermis which regenerates every 28 days. The second layer called the Dermis. And finally the third, fatty layer where the root of the hair is called the Hypadermis. In tattooing, the needle goes down to the bottom of the Dermis where pigment is permanent and relatively safe from the sun. In SMP, we can only go to the top of the Dermis, about 1.35mm (the width of a dime) in order to keep the dots small and natural looking. Because of this shallow depth, SMP is considered semi-permanent with a life span of about 3-7 years depending on how good you take care of it. That comes down to sun exposure. I typically tell my clients 30 mins max of direct sun exposure and then you’ll need to wear a hat.

Will it turn blue or green?

It can, if the artist doesn’t know what they’re doing. If the pigment isn’t mixed with the client’s skin tone in mind, it can turn blue tones for lighter skin clients and green tones for darker skinned clients. Over-saturation can also lead to off colored procedures. Artists really have to be skilled and well versed when it comes to color theory and pigment mixture.

How many sessions will it take?

The average client requires between 3-4 sessions with 10-14 days between each session. Each session can last between 2-4 hours give or take depending on the amount of thinning. This is based off of two factors: one, how well your skin holds the pigment and two, when you as the client are happy. We’re done when you’re happy. But not to fear, all of your necessary sessions are built into the price so you don’t have to guess about what the final price will be. Be careful though, typically you’ll receive a quote from an artist but that price will only cover 2 sessions. They don’t tell you that you’ll have to pay another $800-$1000 for each subsequent session needed.

Is it painful?

In terms of pain levels, my clients usually place it between 3-7 on a scale of 1-10. But really, it’s based on the amount of nerve endings you have in your head. I’ve had clients fall asleep while others are holding on for dear life the whole way through. If you are sensitive to pain, please consult your doctor before coming in.

What are the after care instructions?

For the days 1-3 after each session DO NOT:

  • Allow shower stream to wet head

  • Shave or cut your hair

  • Engage in activities that will cause you to sweat excessively like exercise or saunas

At day 4 you can wash your head with cool water.

Day 7 you can go back to your normal routine including: shaving, hot showers, etc.
